Room Treatment Basics for Home Studios
Your room is the most important piece of gear in your studio. No interface, microphone, or monitor can compensate for a space that lies to you about what you are hearing.
The Problem
Sound reflects off walls, ceilings, and floors. These reflections combine with direct sound from your monitors, creating peaks and nulls at specific frequencies. What sounds balanced in your room may be bass-heavy or thin everywhere else.
The Solution: The ABCs of Treatment
**A — Absorption:**
Absorbers convert sound energy into heat. They tame mid and high frequencies, reducing flutter echo and early reflections.
Place absorption panels at first reflection points: the wall to your left, the wall to your right, and the ceiling above your mix position.
**B — Bass Trapping:**
Low frequencies are the hardest to control. Bass builds up in room corners, creating muddy, undefined low end.
Place bass traps in all four vertical corners of your room. Triangular traps (like the GIK Acoustics Tri-Trap) are designed specifically for this.
**C — Diffusion:**
Diffusers scatter sound rather than absorbing it. They maintain room ambience while breaking up reflections.
Place diffusers on the rear wall behind your mix position to prevent a dead, unnatural listening environment.
The 80/20 Rule
If you do only three things:
1. Add bass traps in corners
2. Add absorption at first reflection points
3. Add a rug on hard floors
You will hear a dramatic improvement in monitoring accuracy. Everything else is optimization.
