The Essential Home Studio Setup
Building a home studio can feel overwhelming. The internet is full of conflicting advice, sponsored content, and gear lists that assume you have an unlimited budget.
Here is the truth: you need four things to make professional-sounding recordings at home.
1. A Computer and a DAW
Any modern computer will work. Focus on RAM (16GB minimum) and an SSD for your projects. For software, choose one DAW and learn it deeply: Logic Pro (Mac), Ableton Live, Pro Tools, or Reaper.
2. An Audio Interface
This is the bridge between your analog world and your digital workspace. Start with a 2-input interface. The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is the default recommendation for a reason — it is affordable, reliable, and sounds great.
3. One Great Microphone
You do not need a locker of mics. Start with one versatile workhorse. The Shure SM7B handles vocals, guitars, and podcasts. If your budget allows, the Audio-Technica AT2020 is an excellent condenser for acoustic instruments and voice.
4. Headphones or Monitors
Headphones are cheaper and easier in untreated rooms. The Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro (open-back for mixing) or ATH-M50x (closed-back for tracking) are proven choices.
What You Do NOT Need Yet
- - Expensive outboard gear
- A separate control room
- A $3000 microphone
- Perfect acoustic treatment
Start with the basics. Learn your gear. Upgrade when you hit a wall — not before.
